Wrong-Way Driver Causes Five-Car Pileup

Posted: 4:17 pm PDT August 9, 2008

Washington State Patrol Troopers told KIRO TV News Saturday that a five-car crash on I-405 started with a teenaged driver going the wrong way.

The crash happened just after midnight in the northbound lanes of the freeway near North 195th Street.

Troopers said a 17-year-old was girl was driving a 1996 Toyota Carolla southbound in the northbound HOV lane when she plowed into a BMW. That caused a chain reaction crash when the BMW was forced into a Honda Accord and debris from the crash hit two other cars.

Three people were hurt, including the teenager, who was treated and then booked into juvenile detention.

A preliminary report from the WSP indicates that alcohol might have played a role in the crash.
