Lightning Starts Fire Near Mount Washington

NORTH BEND, Wash. -- Firefighters worked through the night after a fire was reported Sunday night on Mount Washington in the Cascades, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.Eastside Fire and Rescue said they received multiple calls to their dispatch center reporting that the fire was visible from North Bend and started after a lightning strike at 10:18 p.m.
RAW VIDEO: Fire Threatens Major Water SupplyResponding Eastside Fire units determined that the fire was high up Mount Washington in Department of Natural Resources- protected land and notified the State Emergency Operation Center at Camp Murray, said DNR spokesman Bruce McDonald.McDonald said that the land is in the Cedar Falls Watershed, which is owned by the city of Seattle and serves about 1.4 million customers in King County, about 70 percent of the county's population.McDonald said two engines and a bulldozer from Seattle Public Utilities responding.Crews said the fire was burning along several trees near the summit of Mount Washington and because a water-dropping helicopter was sidelined due to fog, crews shipped water up to the mountain top and then ran a hose line in to try to contain the flames.The fire, which was about 1,600 square feet, was contained Monday morning.The water flowing near the fire was flowing away from the watershed.
