SEATTLE -- Although Seattle’s City Council approved a 20-cents bag-fee for the use of paper or plastic, there are people who are still fighting it.Both sides of the paper or plastic issue came face-to-face in Seattle Monday morning. The Washington Food Industry is gathering signatures to try and overturn the bag-fee ordinance, but a grassroots group is doing everything it can to make sure the petition doesn't get signed.
SURVEY: In Favor Of Shopping Bag Tax?
DISCUSS: Disposable Bag Fee"I think everybody gets to change their habits," said Sally Wolf, who supports the bag-fee. Independent grocers such as Metropolitan Market and Red Apple Market, who are being represented by the Washington Food Industry, want customers to decide."We'd at least like to be able to give people a choice whether they'd want to vote yes or no and that's the way," said Tamara Wilson of Metropolitan Market. The grassroots group fighting the petition drive is taking its message to several grocery stores, urging shoppers not to sign the petition."It's not gonna cause people a whole ton of money if they bring reusable bags. It's not a tax. This is a thing that's actually a low-cost thing for folks," said Heather Trim of People for Puget Sound. The Washington Food Industry has 10 more days to gather more than 14,000 signatures for the referendum. If they gather enough signatures the referendum to overturn the bag-fee, it would be on the ballot next summer.
