Jack Creek Fire Near Stevens Pass Still Burning

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- A fire near Stevens Pass that was started by lightning a week ago is still burning about 15 miles southwest of Leavenworth, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.The Jack Creek Fire has now consumed more than a thousand acres of timber and brush and the fire shows no sign of slowing down.The fire is burning at the top of a remote ridge in thick timber in steep, difficult terrain.Firefighters on the scene are chopping down burned trees and trying to cut a fire line around the blaze.Smoke from the fire can be seen in Leavenworth, Wenatchee and as far away as Ellensburg and Cle Elum.The Northwest Coordination Center said there were 414 lightning strikes in Western Washington from Saturday to Sunday and 588 lightning strikes from Sunday into Monday morning.
