Fallen Forest Officer 'Was Professional, Thorough'

PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- A moment of silence was held in Port Angeles Tuesday for the remembrance of a U.S. Forest Service Officer.Fellow Forest Service Officer Bob Tokach lowered a flag remembering a fallen friend he knew for 20 years. “I felt it was important when they asked for someone to lower the flags, so I volunteered to do it, but it's hard to keep from tearing at this point," Tokach said.Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks, 51, was killed Saturday while investigating a suspicious vehicle near the Dungeness Forks Campground in Olympic National Forest about six miles south of Sequim. Fairbanks was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Forest Service and is survived by her husband, a Fish and Wildlife officer, and her 15-year-old daughter. Fairbanks grew up in Clallam County and her family has been stationed in Forks for more than 10 years."She was professional, she was thorough. She was well-trained and capable. She was a friend to a lot of people," said Washington State Patrol Capt. Christine Lynch.Fairbanks worked with and helped train countless other law enforcement officers, from sheriff deputies to state troopers.“A lot of us here knew Officer Fairbanks, and it's hard to be out here to go through this," said WSP Trooper Krista Hedstrom.Fairbanks was best known as a K-9 officer with her German Shepherd Radar. In 2007, Fairbanks was one of only 40 Forest Service Officers nationwide who worked with a trained police dog. Radar was found unharmed after Fairbanks was shot.The U.S. Forest Service said Fairbanks was the sixth USFS officer to die in the line of duty since 1918.In a press release from the Olympic National Forest:Fairbanks’ memorial service is Monday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Civic Field in Port Angeles. The memorial service is open to the public.Several memorials for Fairbanks have been set up in Forks and Port Angeles. In Forks, the memorial is at the transit center at E Street and Forks Avenue. In Port Angeles, the site is at the Port Angeles Police Departments front entrance at 321 East 5th Street. Cards may be sent to the Fairbanks family care of the Pacific Ranger District, 437 Tillicum Lane, Forks, WA 98331. Those wishing to send flowers may have them delivered to Harper Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 West 4th Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
