Police: Airsoft Rifle Sniper Hits Woman, Baby In Bremerton

POSTED: 12:53 pm PDT October 1, 2008
UPDATED: 8:55 am PDT October 2, 2008

A 29-year-old man is arrested and charged with second-degree assault after he allegedly shot a mom and her baby daughter with an airsoft rifle, said Sgt. Kevin Crane of the Bremerton Police Department.

Bradley Rood was sitting behind a fence and under a stairwell Saturday when he shot the airsoft rifle at Cathy Gleave and her 8-month old daughter Carra, Crane said.

Gleave told police that she was in the parking lot of her Bremerton apartment complex when she felt something strike her leg.

“The next thing I know I'm getting shot all over with a pellet gun,” Gleave said. “I couldn't see anybody. He was hiding and he just kept going and shooting and I was like, what the heck?”

The hard plastic rounds from the airsoft rifle hit her in the leg and hit her daughter Carra in the forehead, face and on the back of her neck, Gleave said.

Gleave and Carra suffered minor welts and did not go to the hospital.

Rood apologized to Gleave for hitting her and her daughter and the she watched him go into his apartment.

On Monday, Gleave reported the incident to police. Police were able to locate Rood in Seattle and he returned to Bremerton for questioning.

Rood admitted to the shooting, but said he was not shooting at them, Crane said.

Bremerton police arrested Rood and charged him with second-degree assault.

Investigators said toy gun or not, Gleave and Carra could have been badly hurt.

“These things shoot very hard plastic ball bearing type of things that can cause a lot of injuries. These things fire at over 600 feet per second,” Crane said.

Rood’s rifle was confiscated.
