Snohomish County To Pay Slain Teen's Parents

POSTED: 1:29 pm PDT October 5, 2008
UPDATED: 1:32 pm PDT October 5, 2008

Snohomish County has agreed to pay more than $1 million to the parents of a Stanwood High School student who was shot to death by her ex-boyfriend.

Dayna Fure's parents alleged in their federal civil rights lawsuit that police failed to protect their 18-year-old daughter from Mario Valentin, despite numerous warnings that he was a threat to her.

Fure had obtained a protection order against Valentin, after Valentin engaged in an armed standoff at her workplace with Stanwood police and Snohomish County sheriff's deputies.

But Valentin, 23, of Seattle, snuck into her bedroom on May 24, 2004, shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

The county has agreed to increase domestic violence training for deputies as part of the settlement.
