Pipe Bomb Found In Pickup That Caused Fatal Kitsap Crash

POSTED: 12:02 pm PDT October 9, 2008
UPDATED: 7:44 am PDT October 10, 2008

Troopers found a pipe bomb in the pickup truck that they said caused a fatal crash on a Kitsap County highway, and they have arrested the pickup's driver, the Washington State Patrol said.

The driver, who was treated for injuries he suffered in the collision, is being held on suspicion of possessing an explosive device, found as investigators were examining the vehicle after the crash, said Lt. Clint Casebolt of the State Patrol.

The collision Thursday morning killed one person, injured five others and left a path of destruction along Highway 3 just west of Bremerton National Airport.

Troopers told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News the pickup truck crossed the center line near Barney White Road at about 7 a.m. The driver of a semitrailer tried to avoid the pickup, but the truck hit a small Mitsubishi, crushing it and trapping the car's driver.

Firefighters freed the Mitsubishi's driver, who was conscious and talking to rescuers, and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. No information was available about the condition of the 24-year-old man from Belfair because of federal privacy laws.

The truck also hit a maroon Yukon, killing Thomas Gamblin, 42, of Belfair, who was driving to work in Bremerton, troopers said.

Three people in the cab of the semitrailer suffered minor injuries.

The crash Thursday morning left crushed vehicles, car parts, pieces of drywall -- apparently carried by the truck -- and other wreckage strewn along the highway.

The highway was closed all day as rescue personnel as the State Patrol investigates and crews clear debris from the scene. It was reopened at about 6 p.m.
