Centralia Group Home Manager Pleads Guilty To Child Rape

Posted: 5:42 pm PDT October 24, 2008

The manager of a Centralia group home for disabled adults has pleaded guilty to several charges including child rape Wednesday after he was accused of luring teenage boys to the home and raping them.

Robert Strickland, 34, was arrested Oct. 13 after a month-long investigation. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail on charges of raping and molesting two 15-year-old boys.

Strickland has pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree child rape, one count of third-degree child molestation, and one count of violating a protection order.

Centralia police said the suspect befriended troubled teens at narcotics anonymous meetings, gained their trust, and eventually molested them.

Police believe there are at least two other teenage victims. None of the victims are residents of the home, police said.

"His home was a clean and sober place where they could come, they could play video games, they could do these things," said Chris Fitzgerald of the Centralia Police Department.

Some of the residents at the group home for disabled adults, recovering from substance abuse issues, said they were immediately suspicious.

“What would you think when a 34-year-old man has 15-year-old boys hanging around?" said group home resident Lester Cates.

The teenaged victims eventually told their parents and when police arrived to arrest Strickland they made another startling discovery.

"There was a 17-year-old boy who was hiding in the closet of the bedroom," Fitzgerald said.

Deputies said Strickland is also suspected of illegally using some of the residents' food stamps.

Detectives served a search warrant at the group home, seizing computer hard drives, exterior storage devices and other records from the suspect's room, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators are also examining if any of the adults at the group home were victims.

Strickland is scheduled to be sentence Dec. 3.
