Lakewood Man's Stolen Wheelchair Recovered

Posted: 12:01 pm PST November 5, 2008

Lakewood police spokesman Lieutenant Heidi Hoffman said the electric wheelchair stolen from a 72-year-old man was recovered Wednesday.

Hoffman said a detective spotted a woman riding the wheelchair and followed her, waiting until she entered a residence. Upon questioning, the detective determined the wheelchair was the one stolen from James Dinsmore on Sunday when a man charged Dinsmore, knocked him to the ground and took the chair.

The motorized wheelchair is the only way Dinsmore can get around after he suffered breaks to his hip, thigh and back after several falls.

Hoffman said the woman riding in the stolen wheelchair claimed it was given to her by another woman. That woman told detectives the chair was given to her by a male friend.

No arrests have been made in the case.
