Graham School Hosting Donkey Basketball, PETA Wants It Benched

A nonprofit organization is promoting donkey basketball games at a Graham high school, but PETA is asking the school to cancel it.

The Bethel Foundation is sponsoring the donkey basketball games, featuring three games with a total of 32 adults riding donkeys, at the Graham-Kapowsin High School on Sat. Nov. 22.

PETA is asking people to contact the school’s principal and superintendent and urge them to cancel the event or replace it with an activity that doesn’t involve live animals.

PETA said donkeys used in basketball games are often dragged, kicked, or hit by stray balls and are sometimes seriously injured in falls. Hauled around in cramped trailers, the donkeys are denied proper exercise. Food and water are often withheld before games in an effort to prevent unsightly accidents.

PETA also said the noise and chaos of the games are extremely stressful for the donkeys.

The school is not sponsoring the event. The sponsor, the Bethel Foundation, is a nonprofit organization designed to promote Academics, Arts and Athletics throughout the Bethel community.

It’s a free event with donations being accepted during the game.
