The Seattle School District is facing a $24 million budget shortfall and closing older schools with low enrollment is one solution.

A recent audit found that Seattle Public Schools has 18 percent more classroom space than the district needs because of declining enrollment.

Two years ago, a school district proposal to close school was canceled under criticism from parents.

The Seattle district is the largest in Washington with about 44,000 students in 100 schools.

Several hearings will be held discussing the recommendations before the school board votes on the recommendations on Jan. 29.
