Vandals Hit State Capitol Again

Vandals hit the state Capitol again and this time the damage in Olympia is more than $16,000.

Visitors at the state Capitol are angry that vandals spray painted the front of the building with a mix of anarchy, no war and even peace symbols.

"That's unfortunate in these economic times that we're spending that kind of money cleaning it up," said Katherine Gray, Capitol visitor.

A special blend of chemicals has removed some of the paint from this historic sandstone building -- but the process is time consuming and expensive.

"The latest incident is going to cost us at least $16,000,” said Steve Valandra, Washington Department of General Administration.

Graffiti vandals have hit the Capitol three times this year including during a protest on May Day. The overall damage now exceeds $30,000.

"I think the general sentiment is you'd like to see these people caught and strung up," Valandra said.

Those who have to clean up the graffiti said they believe in free speech, but not destroying property that we all have to pay for.

"If you want to protest fine, do it in person, be a man about it, but this is just gutless," Valandra said.
