Former UW Football Star Charged With 5th DUI

A former University of Washington football star was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence for the fifth time in Washington state.

Reggie Rogers told KIRO 7 reporter Karen O’Leary that he is adamant that he was not drunk last week when he was arrested for DUI and hit-and-run.

"I swear on my dead mom's grave, no…I hadn’t even drank nothing all day,” Rogers said.

According to charging documents released Wednesday morning, Reggie Rogers smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words when he was arrested after a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 5 near the Southcenter Mall.

“I don’t even drink no more. I don’t do drugs, I don’t do none of that. I drink a little beer, all of my neighbors can tell you, I do it right here. I don’t drink and drive. I'm 45, I'm not a kid,” Rogers said.

Rogers, who will be 45 in January, is charged with two misdemeanors.

Arresting troopers said they smelled the overwhelming odor of intoxicants on his breath. They said he was belligerent and at one point said he wanted to kiss a trooper.

Rogers admits he may have smelled, but said it was only because he didn’t shower or brush his teeth that day because he was late for a court hearing on a disability claim.

"They smelled last night's beer, but they didn’t smell no beer like I was drinking," Rogers said.

Rogers blames his odd demeanor on a seizure condition. He said his health is bad -- a result of years of playing football at the University of Washington and then in the pros.

In 1988, police said Rogers was drunk when he ran a red light in Pontiac, Michigan, hit another car and killed three teenagers.

Rogers was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1987.
