A woman who is five months pregnant was critically hurt when she was struck by a pickup in Puyallup Monday evening by man accused of drunken driving, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Lisa Close, 28, was pushing her 3-year-old daughter in a stroller when she saw a pickup truck speeding toward her in the 2900 block of East Main Avenue in Puyallup.

Close pushed the stroller away, saving the 3-year-old’s life, but she was struck by a Toyota Tundra truck.

Close’s family said the impact shattered her pelvis and broke her legs and her ribs, and she also has a head injury. She has never fully regained consciousness.

Doctors told Close’s family that her unborn 5-month-old baby boy was in the perfect place in the womb to absorb the impact.

Her 22-year-old boyfriend and her 5-year-old daughter were walking behind her at the time of the incident. Neither the man nor the two girls was hurt.

“Lisa told me -- she's always telling me, that she’d do anything for her children and this proves that she did," said Close’s mother, Kathy Long.

Puyallup detectives said the driver of the pickup, a 29-year-old Puyallup man, stopped at the scene and was arrested for suspicion of vehicular assault for the injuries of the mother and her unborn child.

Police said that a preliminary investigation revealed the driver had been drinking. He was given a blood test, but the results have not yet been released.

Close’s parents saw the man driving the truck that struck their daughter.

“He needs to be punished for what he did. He needs to get help for what he did, so this don't happen to anybody else," said Long’s father, Steve Long.

Close’s friends are making a plea to the city to add lights to the street which they said is not well lit.

“Please City of Puyallup, this is a dangerous road and so many families live off of it. If you could please even put in a couple lights it would improve so much," said Close’s friend Katie Kortman.
