Crews Remove Buses From I-5 Near Denny Way

Posted: 12:33 pm PST December 19, 2008Updated: 6:20 pm PST December 19, 2008

The Washington Department of Transportation periodically shut down lanes of northbound Interstate 5 near Denny Way Friday night as crews removed a bus that was hanging over the interstate from an earlier incident.

Two buses crashed Friday and one went through a barrier next to Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle, leaving it with its front wheels hanging 20 feet above the freeway.

One of the buses, which had only a front corner jutting past the guardrail, was pulled back from the edge by a tow truck by about 5 p.m. -- 4 1/2 hours after the crash.

The second bus was pulled back by 6:20 p.m.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Essex Porter said the buses were returning from the Columbia Basin Job Corps camp near Moses Lake.

The bus exited off I-5 as was looking for the Greyhound bus terminal. As he was driving, he decided that Denny Way was too icy and quickly diverted to Thomas Street, but was unable to make the turn, causing the bus to go through the railing above I-5.

Shortly after, a second tour bus of the same group came down the same hill, was unable to stop and hit the first bus and the railing as well.

Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick says 11 young adults are being taken to Harborview Medical Center with minor injuries from debris and flying glass.

Fitzpatrick says there is no danger of either bus going over the guardrail. She says all the approximately 80 passengers were able to get off the buses before emergency vehicles arrived at the scene.

Angela Maxie said her daughter Nicole was on the Northwestern Trailways bus that was hanging over I-5.

Maxie said her daughter is in shock because she had to climb out of the bus through glass as it was hanging over the freeway.

The cause of the accident is not immediately known, but winter weather has left many city streets coated with ice.
