Girl Confronts Rapist At Sentencing Hearing

Posted: 3:57 pm PST January 6, 2009Updated: 4:17 pm PST January 6, 2009

A judge handed down an exceptional 60-year sentence for a Parkland man convicted of rape after his 11-year-old victim confronted him in court Tuesday.

The victim, now 13, told the judge she suffers nightmarish memories of the attack by Peter Inouye, 26, who broke into her family's Olympia home, choked her and raped her at knifepoint.

"If Peter hadn't done this to me, I would most likely still be living at my old house, safe and secure," the girl said at the sentencing hearing in Thurston County Superior Court.

Inouye listened as the girl's mother asked the judge to lock him up for life.

"No one, let alone an 11-year-old girl, should ever have to know what it's like to be choked so hard you think you're going to die," the victim's mother said.

Soon after the attack, police arrested a man found living in a home-made bunker in a city park. The man with mental problems was charged with the rape, but released when DNA results ruled him out.

Police then followed Inouye, who knew the family. Inouye was arrested after he spat on the street and police took a sample to match DNA evidence from the victim.
