Animal control officers seized another 308 dogs from a kennel south of Mount Vernon, bringing the total number of dogs seized to 443, said Chief Criminal Deputy Will Reichardt of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.

Animal control officers first removed 135 dogs from a kennel in the 16000 block of Mountain View Road on Wednesday after they received reports of animal cruelty at the kennel.

Many of the dogs were heavily matted and were standing in their own feces in wire cages, Reichardt said.

Deputies discovered that several of the dogs originally taken from the kennel were suffering from an intestinal disorder that could be fatal if not treated with antibiotics, Reichardt said.

The intestinal disorder is transmitted via fecal matter, so deputies suspected that the dogs left behind could also be infected, Reichardt said.

The remaining dogs were also transported to the Skagit County fairgrounds to be examined and treated.

After the dogs have been cleaned and examined they will be kept at shelters and private residences.
