Prosecutors have filed two charges of vehicular homicide against a Renton man who is accused of causing a head-on collision that killed two people in Pierce County in December.

Scott M. Buskeness was driving a 1998 Honda Civic north on state Route 7 at 146th Street East at about 1:45 a.m. Dec. 8 when he crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a 1993 Dodge Colt head-on, troopers said.

Buskeness collided with the car driven by 34-year-old Richard Pennington of Lakewood. Jaime Rainford, 34, of Roy was a passenger in the car, WSP said.

Both Pennington and Rainford suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma, where they both later died.

A third passenger in the Dodge, 36-year-old Michelle Tuskey of Eatonville, sustained critical injuries and was transported To Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.

Buskeness suffered injuries from the collision and was transported to Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma.

Troopers at the scene said they saw signs that Buskeness may have been intoxicated when the accident happened. Buskeness first told investigators he had been smoking marijuana but later said he had been using methamphetamine within the previous 24 hours, according to a court document.

Buskeness has a record of 19 felony convictions. He was scheduled in court Friday afternoon.
