SEATTLE -- “It did not need to go that far.” That is what we’re hearing from the 16-year old who was allegedly assaulted by a King County Sheriff’s Deputy in a SeaTac holding cell last year.I talked with Malika Calhoun and her father this morning from New York, where they’d just wrapped up an exclusive interview with the CBS Early Show.Last November, Calhoun was brought into the Sea-Tac holding cell as a possible theft suspect. In surveillance video released last week, you see King County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Schene react when Calhoun kicks off her shoe in Schene’s direction.RAW VIDEO: Camera Captures Jail Cell Incident
Regarding the shoe, Calhoun tells me, “I was not trying to hurt him or anything just trying to take it off because of the way I was being treated and the way he was talking to me.”Calhoun tells me there were “bad vibes” between she and the deputy from the time she was brought into the station. After Calhoun kicked off her shoe – as you see in the surveillance video -- you see the deputy run in, grab the then 15-year old and slam her against the wall.He then pulls her to the ground by the hair and appears to hit her twice.Calhoun tells me, “I was in total shock. I couldn’t believe it at all. For the first three seconds my head was in the wall as soon as I got there I said ‘I’m not resisting.’ I was shocked the whole time I couldn’t believe it.”The sophomore at Youth Source in Renton says the deputy told her she assaulted him by hitting him with her shoe. The deputy has said he went into the holding cell to prevent another assault. Schene has pleaded not guilty to fourth-degree assault.Meantime, Curtiss Calhoun, Malika’s father tells me they are returning to the Seattle area and will consult an attorney to decide their next course of action. When asked if this means they are thinking about suing Calhoun would only tell me, “we’ll just speak with an attorney and see what he suggests. I have no idea right now.”
