Ship Leaks Oil In Tacoma, Seattle

Crews are working to plug a leak in a ship that's docked at Terminal 5 in Elliott Bay.

Larry Altos of the state DOE said the leak is in the bow thruster of the Huyndai Republic. A diver is attempting to install a temporary seal to the thruster so the ship can return to its home port for repairs.

Clean up operations in Blair Waterway in Tacoma are complete after absorption materials left overnight showed no appreciable amounts of hydraulic oil.

Video from Chopper 7 showed an extensive sheen on the Blair Waterway at the Port of Tacoma near the Emerald Queen Casino on Tuesday afternoon.

Crew members of the Hyundai Republic interviewed by Coast Guard investigators said the ship likely lost most of the contents of a hydraulic reservoir which contains about 158 gallons of hydraulic fluid.

Kurt Hart from the Department of Ecology said hydraulic fluid can spill thinly and spread quickly on the water. The fluid may have been in the water for several hours when it was discovered, he said.

The Coast Guard said a single quart of oil can foul more than 100,000 gallons of water and cover many acres.
