Expect Longer Lines At Driver Licensing Offices

Getting a driver license will become even more time consuming for thousands of people starting Friday as the Department of Licensing is closing 25 offices due to state budget cuts.

Auburn's office is just one those offices set to be closed and residents said they are pretty upset. The next closest office is in Kent.

"Sit and wait, and wait, and wait. Because it is always busy, busy, busy. If it is busy, why are you closing it down?" said Auburn resident Rob Hancock.

For people in Friday Harbor, when their licensing office closes next summer they'll have to travel 28 miles, including a ferry ride, to Anacortes.

When the Forks office shuts its doors, people will have to go 52 miles to get a license to Port Angeles.

For some residents, closing the DOL offices will just mean more people waiting in the locations that are open.

The DOL said it hopes to improve time spent waiting in line by expanding hours and adding staff at new supercenter locations.

Overall, the closures will shave $2.6 million off the budget.

Under the budget cuts, DOL locations in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, Bellevue, and West Tacoma are also closing.
