Authorities put Radford University in Virginia under lockdown as they scoured the campus for a gunman wanted in a fatal Thursday night shooting.

According to TV station WDBJ in Roanoke, Va., the university sent emergency alerts reading, "Seek shelter. City is searching for a black male shooter no shirt, camo jacket do rag."

Police said the man shot someone in the chest at 9:10 p.m. They said the unidentified victim died. The shooting occurred about three blocks from the campus, but police said the gunman have fled onto the school grounds. Rebecca Hawke, a City of Radford spokeswoman, issued a statement saying the man was last seen traveling west, toward the campus. A WDBJ reporter on campus said that at least two tactical teams were on campus and one building was being evacuated.

Radford is in southwestern Virginia, near the West Virginia border.
