Teen In Custody In Elderly Woman's Death

A 17-year-old boy who was taken into custody Sunday night after an 87-year-old woman was found dead in her home appeared in court Monday afternoon, authorities said.

After the teen's aunt brought him to police, the boy was taken into custody without incident at about 7:45 p.m. and booked into a juvenile detention facility in Port Orchard for investigation of first-degree murder, said Deputy Scott Wilson of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.

"Through witness interviews and other information gleaned by detectives in the course of the investigation, they have determined that they have probable cause to arrest this young man," Wilson said.

Wilson said the teen was a neighbor of Ruby Andrews, who was found dead in her home on Sunday.

An autopsy revealed that Andrews was stabbed to death.

The sheriff's office received a 911 call at 4:46 p.m. Sunday from her husband, Earl, who said he had found his wife dead when he returned to the family home.

Wilson said the family's white 1993 Cadillac DeVille, a four-door sedan that was missing from the home's driveway, was found abandoned in a parking lot just outside the city limits of Port Orchard.

A neighbor told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Gary Horcher that he noticed the Cadillac in the parking lot of his apartment complex, about three miles from where Andrews was slain.

Police said the boy stole the Cadillac and took several hundred dollars that was hidden in a picture frame at the victim's home.

Neighbors along the quiet, wooded street where Andrews lived said they were in shock over the killing.

"I think I'm going to lock my doors and not leave my kids, and be a lot more aware of what's going on," said LeAnn Canton.
