A one-car crash in Mason County killed the 14-year-old passenger of a car and seriously injured his 16-year-old brother, Washington State Patrol Trooper Krista Hedstrom said.

The crash happened at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday on state Route 3 at milepost 17, three miles south of Allyn.

Hedstrom said Joshua McGuire, 16, was driving a 1987 BMW northbound when his car left the roadway to the left and struck a utility pole. His 14-year-old brother, Jordan McGuire, who was seated in the front passenger seat, died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Joshua was transported to Mason General Hospital with a serious head injury and a broken neck. He was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where he remained in serious condition on Tuesday.

The Washington State Patrol said it did not appear that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call 360-405-6613.

Police said the teenagers were on their way to school for late start due to the WASL. Both boys attended North Mason High School in Belfair.

North Mason School District Superintendent David Peterson said Joshua is a junior at the school. He’s known as a smart kid and a high school chess champion.

Jordan was a freshman and is being remembered as a talented drummer and a caring friend.

"At first it's hard to accept, hard to believe that you're getting that news and then emotions run over and you worry about the family," Peterson said.

Peterson said a formal announcement to students about the accident would be made on Wednesday and that grief counselors would be available.
