Children's Ride Topples At Puyallup Fair; 6 Hurt

Five children and one adult were hurt after an amusement ride in the Puyallup Spring Fair's Kiddyland area toppled Friday evening, fair and hospital officials told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Fourteen children were aboard the Lolli Swings ride when it tipped over at about 6:40 p.m. Fair representative Karen LaFlamme said one child suffered a serious leg injury.

Eyewitness Gary Crueger said he heard an "extraordinary amount of screaming, parents were scrambling and it was complete panic."

Chopper 7 over the scene showed medics treating a number of children and loading people into ambulances.

Four children were taken to Mary Bridge Hospital. One child and one adult were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. Officials at the hospitals, citing privacy regulations, said they could not release information about injuries or conditions.

The ride has swing-type seats that rotate around a central pillar, and has operated at the fair for the past five years.

LaFlamme said the ride passed an inspection Wednesday by the state Department of Labor & Industries.

An investigation is under way. LaFlamme said it's possible rain-soaked ground under the ride contributed to the accident.
