Light Rail, Woman Collide In South Seattle

A 60-year-old woman was running across a south Seattle intersection when a Sound Transit light rail train struck her.

Sound Transit said the woman was running across South Othello Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Way Friday afternoon when she hit the train.

The train was headed northbound with a green signal light and the woman ran into the side of the train near the front, said Geoff Patrick at Sound Transit. He said her timing was fortunate because she bounced backwards.

A fire department spokeswoman said the pedestrian was not seriously hurt. Chopper 7 video showed a patient on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance.

She was taken to the Veteran's Administration Hospital, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Deborah Horne.

This is the second time in just nine days that the light rail train has been involved in an accident.

Seattle's new 14-mile light rail line is scheduled to open July 18. It will run from a tunnel in downtown Seattle to a station less than 2 miles from Sea-Tac Airport.

Sound Transit officials said everyone needs to be alert.
