Do cars stop for you when you try to cross the road or drivers do the walkers do something they shouldn't?The KIRO 7 Traffic team joined Seattle Police on a crosswalk sting in North Seattle. In a one hour time period, officers gave out more than 40 tickets. The biggest violation was not stopping for a pedestrian that was showing intent to cross the road. We also saw pedestrians breaking the law. You can watch the video from the sting at this link .Join in on the conversation!E-mail me, tweet me on twitter, join the discussion on my facebook account OR leave a comment below. What you’re saying? Here are some of the responses on both Twitter and Facebook:I always stop for someone in a marked crosswalk but when I try and cross the cars will not stop for me and let me cross. @JRDaffParadeBoth groups are great in Olympia=friendliest Wa city! @PJDente Many do but others either don't know the law or don't care. Need more public education; the bright ped cross signs are good.@steffieann Often times I am trying to cross in a crosswalk and cars do not stop! Morons! Are pedestrians always at fault in a ped-vehicle accident?@kaylascute 1/6 probably. As a driver, too many peds step off the curb and start walking without making eye contact w/ car & go.@seaamyOne of my biggest peeves, peds vs cars...many ppl don't even look before crossing!@greydonkey I'm a pedestrian, some cars don't stop, I had the walk light, and this jerk waved his finger as if shame on me for walking.@zyronx Few pedestrians bother to look to see if a car is coming, especially in parking lots. Some rspnsblty should be assumed by peds.@KathyinGraham In Port Angeles you only have to walk to any curb and the cars will stop. Its really weird!@olympicpnwI stop for peds.@erinmorrrisseyCar/pedestrian . In downtown Olympia, this is a huge problem. Cars just don't bother stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks.@TurtleNorthwestI was hit by a car on my run 3 weeks ago! I did a superstud spin off the hood, throw my arms up in the air!@Brookefox Most of the time, cars do not stop for peds in crosswalks, therefore peds must try to cross in traffic. DO NOT walk in BOSTON!@RavinDarkstarrI always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. I get tired of jaywalkers and people who jump in the street and assume I see them.@waynemccoyWalkers often leave the sidewalk without looking, wearing ear buds, and directly into the path of cars already turning....and in fairness, drivers turning R at intersections are often too busy looking L & forget to check for peds in the xwalk.@Lane_BaileyI've noticed since I moved DT & walk/bus everywhere that cars very rarely yield for pedestrians when making "free" right turns.@imaginarychrisb"Well here in Chehalis,I can tell ya that I've stood at a MARKED CROSSWALK and NOONE stops UNTIL I HAVE MY HAND ON MY PHONE @myside..Another thing I've noticed that I've been in the middle of the intersection and WELL,LETS JUST SAY The lane I'm in stops (obviously but the other one has been several feet away from the crosswalk with PLENTY Of room to Stop,Yet they DON'T STOP! At least UNTIL THEY SEE MY phone!" - Malia (Facebook)"I've had to pull my mom out of the way of several cars who don't stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. It's really unfortunate and not very kind." - Christina (Facebook)"I am both driver and pedestrian...I hang out a lot on Broadway in Seattle, and as a driver up there, lights mean nothing to most of the pedestrians, try waiting for a cross walk to clear before the light turns on ya, and 8 times out of 10 you get someone stepping into the crosswalk when it's flashing don't walk and you are forced to make your turn on the red and right on the heals of the pedestrian. As a pedestrian, I've had so many drivers try to beat my stride into the crosswalk when the light change and make the right turn within a foot of my feet cutting me off.... In my younger days they got a dent from my combat boot kicking their door." - Donald (Facebook)"Tell pedestrians DON'T JAYWALK. Tell cars "STOP SIGNS ARE NOT OPTIONAL." Obey the rules and everybody lives." - Jym (Facebook)"Everyone (drivers AND walkers) needs to pay better attention. We all wander around like zombies, tuned in to our cell phones, ipods, deep thoughts -- whatever! ...and then wonder why these accidents keep happening. Tune in to what's going on around you, people!" - Erin (Facebook)"Please, remind drivers, that they MUST wait until a crossing pedestrian is either one full lane away or on the curb/sidewalk before proceeding." - Thomas (Facebook)"Pedestrians aren't always right when they cross the street...i've almost hit people who think i should stop on a dime in order for them to jay walk." - Danny (Facebook)Thanks for joining in on this hot topic!Jenni Hogan
