A driver left a trail of injuries and destruction after speeding through a Home Depot parking lot and then hitting vehicles and pedestrians as he fled from police in south Seattle Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the man's rampage began in the parking lot at First Avenue South and South Lander Street where he hit two people and at least two cars. One pedestrian was taken to Harborview Medical Center with injuries police described as not life-threatening.

"He went out and he was like hitting cars and there were two cars over here that like had to swerve to get out of the way when he tore out," said eyewitness Mark Brown.

Janet MacGregor’s vehicle was hit by the suspect as she was leaving the lot.

“He just came out of nowhere and went bam bam bam in the back of this nice sturdy car," MacGregor said.

Another person said the same driver also rammed into the back of his truck.

The collisions got the attention of an off-duty Washington State Patrol trooper who was working security nearby, he ran into the street to try to stop the man.

The trooper was "grazed, but not injured," said Mark Jamieson of the Seattle Police Department. Police said it appeared the driver intentionally struck the trooper.

Police pursued the driver as he continued to flee. When he reached Sixth Avenue South and South Lander Street, he struck a van and a truck. Police said the driver later turned onto Andover Street and appeared to speed up and intentionally ram a semi-tractor. See video of crash scene at Sixth Avenue South and South Andover Street

The vehicle caught fire, police said, and officers put out the fire with extinguishers.

Seattle police said the driver of the fleeing vehicle had to be extricated from his car. Seattle Fire Department paramedics performed CPR on the man in his 40s, who was transported to Harborview Medical Center where he died from his injuries on Wednesday.

Video from Chopper 7 showed numerous fire and police vehicles at the two crime scenes.

It’s still unclear what provoked the man. Police said he may have been in another collision before entering the Home Depot parking lot.

The drivers who were hit told investigators that the suspect had music blaring and was shouting.
