OLYMPIA -- Police found a man's body high up in a tall tree Wednesday, hidden by leaves and unreported -- until this week -- by a man who noticed the body a year ago.
Throughout the day Wednesday, Olympia police worked clearing brush in a greenbelt, where the man's body was discovered hanging 35 feet up in a tree.
Police were led to the grim discovery by a telephone call from a young man who had kept a disturbing secret for a entire year.
"We had a call last night from an individual who said he had seen a body in a tree approximately one year ago," Sergeant Paul Johnson of the Olympia Police Department told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.
But instead of calling police right away the man walked away, telling no one.
"At that time he was involved in some things and had warrants out and was reluctant to call the police," Johnson said.
But Tuesday night, the man came back to the spot with friends. He discovered the body was still there and called police.
There are several homeless camps in these woods and police did discover the remains of a camp at the base of tree where the man's body was found.
"There's a camp down below the tree where the body is located we've gone through and kind of sifted through the debris of the camp but never found anything of significance," Johnson said.
Police said foul play appeared unlikely, but the final determination would be made by the county coroner.
