Another Bear Sighting, But No Bear Found

Seattle police officers responded to a report of a bear seen in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Police combed the area Thursday, but came away empty handed.

Wildlife agents said if it really was a bear in the Beacon Hill neighborhood, it couldn’t have been the same bear spotted 15 miles away Wednesday night. At about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a bear sighting was reported in Lake Forest Park, north of Seattle.

Then Thursday morning, a woman reported seeing a bear in the 5000 block of Beacon Avenue.

Police searched the area and the Chief Sealth Trail for the bear, but didn't find the animal or any signs that the bear was there.

The woman who reported the latest bear sighting said she was "scared half to death." She didn’t want to give her name and she was the only one to report the sighting.

"At first I thought it was a dog," she said.

She spotted the animal lumbering through this grassy field while she was doing her dishes, then grabbed some binoculars for a closer look. She insists that she knows wildlife and worked in a recreational fishing business for years.

"I know a bear. I'm 65 years old and if I don't know a bear by now I'm in trouble," she said.

After searching the area, police officers came up empty.

"So far I've not be able to verify the existence of a bear at all. I'm not saying that we're wrong, but so far we haven't found it yet," said Captain Les Liggins of the Seattle Police Department.

A wildlife agent said his department just doesn't have the manpower to check out every bear sighting to see whether it's valid and that it's difficult to tranquilize and move an animal unless the bear is up a tree or contained in some way.

Earlier this week there were reports of a bear running through Ballard, Crown Hill, then Haller Lake and Shoreline.
