Raw Sewage Pours Into Puget Sound

Posted: 6:54 am PDT June 1, 2009Updated: 8:55 am PDT June 1, 2009

A river of raw sewage is spilling into Puget Sound Monday morning on Bainbridge Island near Eagle Harbor and the Winslow Ferry Dock.

The Bainbridge Island Public Works Department is waiting for low tide Tuesday morning to fix a broken pipe that was discovered on Saturday.

A temporary fix slowed the flow, but by the time the pipe is expected to be fixed on Tuesday, engineers estimate that 140,000 of sewage will have leaked into the water.

"What you see is not everything that we have to deal with. We also have to inspect the integrity of the pipe beyond the immediate leak, and we just physically ran out of time," Lance Newkirk with Bainbridge Island Public Works told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Rick Price who was at the scene Monday.

The breach in the pipe involved two or three finger-sized holes. The corroded pipe was installed in the mid-1970s.

The pipe carries sewage from Winslow to the Bainbridge Island treatment plant.

Once the tide is low enough, crews estimate they'll have about 5 hours to fix the pipe, starting at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The Kitsap County Health District has posted signs warning people of the spill.
