Storms Topple Trees; Thousands Without Power

Posted: 2:37 am PDT June 5, 2009Updated: 7:56 am PDT June 5, 2009

Storms from the south brought thunderstorms, wind, downed trees and power outages to the Puget Sound region.

Thursday night storms knocked out power to more than 14,000 customers in King, Pierce, Kitsap and Thurston counties, KIRO 7 reported.

Power crews from Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light worked throughout the night to restore power to the affected areas.

Of the outages, nearly 6,000 were homes were in the Seattle area. About 2,900 lost power in West Seattle due to downed power lines.

By Friday morning, Seattle City Light had restored power to customers in west and north Seattle. An outage in the Rainier Beach area was about 75 percent restored.

Puget Sound Energy said all customers had power by Friday morning.

The gusts also brought trees down across Western Washington.

In Kent, the wind ripped a tree out of the ground. The 30-foot tree nearly hit a car in the driveway and ended up leaning against a house.

In Auburn, one direction of West Main Street was blocked to drivers by a downed tree. Crews cut the tree into sections before removing it.

Thursday's storms came on the forefront of a cooling trend to the Puget Sound area, which has seen record temperatures for the past few days.

KIRO 7's Chief Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson predicted that Friday would have morning clouds, followed by partly sunny skies, with a chance of showers in the mountains.
