Young Man Struck And Killed By Train In Seattle Park

A young man was struck and killed by a freight train while walking in a Seattle Park Saturday night.

Seattle Police Detective Jeff Kappel told KIRO TV News that the incident happened just before 9 p.m. in Carkeek Park.

Kappel said the site of the accident is about 100 yards north of a pedestrian walkway that goes down to a beach.

The pedestrian died at the scene.

Detective Kappel said that while it is still early in the investigation, it appears that the victim is a man in his early twenties.

Investigators from Seattle Police Department's traffic collision division were on scene investigating what might have happened.

A line for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad runs along Puget Sound near the park.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said the train was a BNSF freight train that had just left Seattle bound for Chicago.

Melonas said there was a report that a number of individuals were on the track when the train sounded its horn and all but one of the individuals scattered.

The individual who remained on the track was killed.
