Garbage Truck Brings Down Power Pole

Both directions of Aurora Avenue North were reopened Monday afternoon after a garbage truck snagged a power line and snapped off a 55-foot power pole.

Waste Management officials said a garbage truck was pulling out of a driveway onto Aurora at about 5 a.m. when it snagged a low-hanging branch that in turn snagged a guy-wire, pulling it so tightly that the rigid wire cut through the truck's top and caused the power pole to snap at the base.

After snapping off at ground level, the power pole remained upright but leaned precariously, held up by the tension of the lines that remained connected to it.

Power was shut off to businesses in the area while Seattle City Light crews assessed the damage. Both directions Aurora Avenue North were closed between North 83rd and 85th streets. The northbound segment of Aurora reopened at about 8:30 a.m., but the southbound lanes did not reopen until mid-afternoon.

Seattle City Light crews worked for hours to replace the entire power pole and damaged lines.

No injuries were reported.
