Fire officials in Monroe are investigating the cause of a house fire, as well as fireworks that were found near the burned home Monday night.

At about 7:42 p.m. firefighters arrived to find a home in the 200 block of South Madison Street fully engulfed in fire. Heavy smoke was visible throughout the Monroe area.

Candice Tarbert was home at the time and barely escaped from the fire.

"I was sleeping and all of a sudden this big gush of black smoke and heat came in and burned me and I got up and ran," Tarbert said.

Tarbert ran to a back bedroom upstairs.

"Punched out the screen, threw the cat out the window and I think he doubled back and I grabbed another cat and then threw him," Tarbert said.

She eventually crawled out onto the roof of the first floor, and was able to drop to the ground with the help of neighbor.

Tarbert was transported to Valley General Hospital where she was treated and released.

Officials said the home was extensively damaged and is a total loss. It is not known whether the home had working smoke detectors.

Firefighters were at the scene Tuesday morning performing salvage and overhaul operations along with heavy machinery to clear debris from the collapsed home.

Monroe firefighters don't know what caused the fire.

"We may never know but fireworks were found in the yard. We don't know if that's what caused it, but it obviously does raise some concern with the coming weekend. Obviously something like that can happen with fireworks," said Richelle Risdon of Monroe Fire District 3.

It’s unclear if her cats ran away or perished in the fire.
