Injured Climber Airlifted Off Mount Rainier

A park ranger was airlifted from Mount Rainier after he fell into a 40-foot crevasse.

Park spokesman Stephan Lofgren said the 27-year-old man was skiing down Emmons Glacier at about 2 p.m. Wednesday after a routine climb to the summit when he skied into the crevasse.

The man was with another Mount Rainier climbing park ranger who called for help.

Rescuers pulled the injured man from the crevasse. He was brought to the 10,000-foot level on the mountain's northeast face where he waited for a helicopter to arrive and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The helicopter arrived at Harborview at about 4:30 p.m. His condition is unknown, but rescue officials initially said he has injuries to his leg and torso, including broken bones.
