Massive Crowds Expected At Lake Union Fireworks Show

Posted: 9:45 am PDT July 3, 2009

With only one major fireworks show in Seattle this year, the city is bracing for record crowds at Gas Works Park on Saturday.

The city is expecting 1,000 to 5,000 extra people to attend the Lake Union show. A longtime Fourth of July fireworks show over Elliot Bay was cancelled this year by its sponsor, Ivars Restaurants.

To prepare for the extra people, the Seattle Police Department set up hundreds of no parking signs throughout the Wallingford neighborhood.

In an effort to limit the number of cars and the impact on residents, the police will be checking people's identifications Saturday in exclusion zones from noon to 6 p.m. The zones are limited to residents only, unless one has a written invitation from homeowners.

The zone is about 50 square blocks and will extend another block after 6 p.m.

The fireworks display will start at 10 p.m. on the Fourth of July, but crowds are expected to start building early in the morning around Gasworks Park and all parking lots within a mile or two of Lake Union.

Those attending the show should expect traffic delays and road closures.
