Posted: 12:30 pm PDT July 5, 2009Updated: 12:14 pm PDT July 6, 2009

A King County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man while responding to a domestic violence call in Woodinville on Saturday.

Police said a 911 call was received at 8:40 p.m. from a home in the 16000 block of Northeast Woodinville-Duvall Road. Call receivers said they heard a woman screaming and crying in the background along with a man’s voice.

Shortly thereafter they heard the woman say "I need the police," and then the call ended.

The first deputy arrived at the home and spoke to the caller, who had injuries from an assault, police said. The woman pointed out a man who was walking away from the house and identified him as her attacker.

A second deputy arrived as the man returned to the home and sat down on the back porch, holding a knife, police said. The man appeared to have self-inflicted wounds on his arms.

Police said the 59-year-old man was shot and killed by one of the deputies shortly after 9 p.m.

The circumstances of the shooting are not known.

An investigation by the King County Sheriff's Office is in progress.
