Ballard 'Hold-Out' House To Be Preserved, Elevated

The home of the late Seattle woman Edith Macefield, who turned down a $1 million offer to sell her tiny house to a developer, has been sold to a company who plans to preserve and elevate it.

The late Edith Macefield made national and international headlines when she refused to sell her home that became sandwiched by commercial buildings in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.

Macefield died in June 2008 and willed the home to Barry Martin, the construction manager who oversaw the development that surrounded her home.

In a deal that closed Tuesday, Martin sold the house Seattle-based Reach Returns. The company plans to remodel the home but keep the outward appearance identical. Once remodeled, the company plans to elevate the home to the height of the surrounding commercial building. In the space underneath the home, a two-level open space will be created that will be open to the public.

Reach Returns

Reach Returns plan for the new Credo Square beneath Macefield's home.

“The Edith Macefield story challenged many people to ask themselves the hard questions: 'What really matters? What do you stand for? What is your credo?'" said Reach Returns co-founder Greg Pinneo. "The home needs to be elevated literally and philosophically. We believe that the depth of thought that this story initiated should live on," he said.

In addition, open spaces under the home will have plantings and water features, and hard surface areas, that will be known as “Credo Square,” will be available for individuals and businesses to etch their “credo” into tiles for all to consider.

Tiles will be available in various sizes for those who wish to participate.
