BELLEVUE, Wash. -- A man was shot and killed by a Bellevue police officer late Tuesday night, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.According to a police news release, at 11:05 p.m. officers responded to a 911 call regarding a man screaming threats and attempting to get into an apartment in the 12200 block of Northeast Eighth Street.Witnesses told police that as the police officer confronted the 62-year-old man, the man attacked the officer with a knife. The officer then opened fire on the man.Medics attempted to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.Mary Kay Pebles said the victim was her husband of eight years, John Pebles. She said he was an angry man, but she can't believe he was shot and killed by Bellevue police."He's an angry person. Angry, very angry. Has been," she said.John Pebles retired from Burlington Northern after 44 years and the couple moved to Bellevue from Spokane about six years ago. Pebles said she was legally separated from her husband, but they lived in the same residence.Pebles said she and her husband had been fighting at their Bellevue apartment so she chained the door to stop him from getting in."He pounded really hard and evidently took the black pot and tried to break the window," Pebles said. Several people soon called 911 and John Pebles left the building and went outside. He walked about two blocks from the apartment and when Bellevue police arrived at the scene, they spotted him on the street."Two of the people who were in my place and another lady saw him go after the police man with a knife. I guess he was wild," Pebles said.Bellevue police said the 62-year-old man they confronted charged at the officer with a knife. Police said the officer then shot and killed him. Pebles said her husband had a long history of domestic violence and although she's still in shock by what happened, she knows for sure someday he would've killed her."If it wasn't last night, eventually down the road I think so," Pebles said.Mary Kay said she would never wish her husband dead and is questioning why police had to kill him.Bellevue police said they are trained, just as they have been for years, to "shoot to stop the threat."The officer involved in the shooting has been with Bellevue police for about six years and is on paid administrative leave, Iafrate said. The Bellevue shooting is the fifth local officer-involved shooting in the past week.On Monday, Seattle police wounded a man in the Central District after he tried to run over them with his car, police said.Saturday, a King County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a Woodinville man during a domestic violence call.On Thursday night, a pair of Snohomish County sheriff's deputies wounded an armed man near Arlington during another domestic violence call.A week ago, a Seattle police detective shot a suspected bank robber in Greenwood. Are you a victim of domestic violence and need assistance?
