Girls Buried In Sand Bank Collapse

Posted: 2:53 pm PDT July 8, 2009

Two girls were injured Monday after a sand bank collapsed on them in Pacific County.

At about 2 p.m. the girls, ages 10 and 11 years old, were playing on Washaway Beach near North Cove when a bank of sand above them collapsed and buried them.

Nearby family members began digging the girls out as rescuers were called. Volunteers from the Grayland Volunteer Fire Department and Twin Harbors State Park helped to free the girls.

Both girls were transported to Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. One girl was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

One of the girls hails from Grays Harbor County. The other is from Montana.

Because of privacy laws, the victims' conditions are not known.
