SEATTLE -- Army officials at Fort Lewis are investigating the death of an Army ROTC cadet whose body was found after he went missing during a training exercise early Thursday morning.Cadet Daniel Miller, 19, was doing a night land navigation training exercise when he went missing around 2 a.m. They started a search in the training area and his body was found around 9:15 that morning. An ROTC spokesman, Paul Kotakis, said the cadet was taking part in a nighttime navigation training exercise when he died."It's intended to help the young person show their skills, by asking them to move from several different locations from place to place and find a location on a map and move to that location and return to the start and stop point," Kotakis said.Officials at Fort Lewis are investigating Miller’s disappearance but do not know the cause of death.Miller was part of the same 29 day training course that more than 5,000 cadets take annually."There is no element of what we have learned so far that causes us to believe that any of the other cadets that are currently participating in the training at Fort Lewis are at any kind of heightened risk. But it would be premature to speculate on any kind of cause," Kotakis said.Miller was a student of Houghton College and a member of the Army ROTC unit at St. Bonaventure University in New York. The Commanding General of the Cadets put out a statement Friday saying, "The men and women of Cadet Command are deeply saddened by the death of Cadet Miller." He said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones."
