The girlfriend of a man shot to death in Tacoma over the weekend said she is heartbroken over his death, but relieved to hear of the suspect’s arrest.

A man was arrested in Tacoma early Wednesday morning on a nationwide first-degree murder warrant after a SWAT team standoff, Tacoma Police spokeswoman Gretchen Aguirre told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The standoff began late Tuesday night in the 9200 block of South Sheridan Street and ended at about 1:30 a.m. when 18-year-old Xavier Magana surrendered.

Tacoma police said Magana gunned down 18-year-old Alrick Hendricks, Jr. Sunday night near the intersection of 55th and South G streets following a fist-fight between the two men.

The victim’s girlfriend, Carri Kitchel, spoke with KIRO 7 reporter Jeff Dubois and said she is grieving, but trying to stay strong for their unborn child.

"I feel like I can't even cry anymore, really," Kitchel said.

Kitchel said her boyfriend and Magana went to middle school together and may have had some altercations several years ago, but she doesn't know what started the argument Sunday night.

Hendricks was attending Bates College, looking for a job and volunteering at a community center.

The couple had been together for a couple years and talked about getting married and raising their child together.

They found out just last week they were having a boy. Three days later, Hendricks was shot and killed.

"I can't eat and I can't sleep and I have to be there for his son. That's what he'd want. He was so happy he was having a baby boy and he wanted to be there for his son,” Kitchel said.

Magana was booked into the Pierce County Jail. He is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police said Magana could be arraigned as early as Wednesday afternoon.

A memorial fund has been set up for Hendricks and donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank in his name. A memorial service will be held on Monday.
