Cruise Line: Missing Alaska Passenger May Be Suicide

A spokeswoman for the Holland America Line said an Arlington woman missing from its cruise ship Zaandam in Alaska appears to be a suicide.

The woman believed to have fallen overboard is 45-year-old Amber Malkuch.

KIRO 7 has learned Mulkuch lived in Arlington with a longtime friend. That's who the 45 year-old woman went on the Alaskan cruise with, according to a friend of Mulkuch.

The friend also says suicide may have been a possibility.

In Seattle Tuesday morning, spokesman Sally Andrews said, "Based on evidence and information to date it does not appear to be foul play."

Malkuch was reported missing by her traveling companion Monday morning when the Zaandam was in Glacier Bay National Park, about 75 miles northwest of Juneau. Holland America said she was last seen hours earlier after she ordered room service, when the vessel was near Alaska's Douglas Island.

A woman's body was found yesterday afternoon by a search helicopter.

The Zaandam remains on schedule and is due to return to Seattle Friday after a week-long cruise.
