ABERDEEN, Wash. -- A granite marker honoring the memory of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain is stirring controversy in the singer's home town of Aberdeen. The monument at the unofficial Kurt Cobain riverfront park contains a number quotes from the singer, including "holding my baby is the best drug in the world."But the quote that's stirring controversy among the community is about drugs: "Drugs are bad for you. They will f__k you up."Aberdeen City councilman Jerry Mills said the expletive on the monument is not OK. Mills said the land is a city right of way and the city gave citizens permission and some help to build the park area, but he did not know profanity would be included on a monument donated to the project.
SURVEY: Should 'F Word' Be Removed? The Daily World reports that the property is also considered a right of for Tori Kovach, who lives adjacent to the land. Kovach was the person who had the idea for the park. The city owns the nearby Young Street Bridge above the Wishkah River, where Cobain is said to have spent some time in his youth. Grays Harbor Monument donated the granite stone, which bears eight quotes which Kovach submitted.People in Aberdeen have differing opinions."The language shouldn't bother people. The way youngsters talk today -- it's a word that's part of our language," said Janis Gerhardt.Mills said it was inappropriate."It's really a shocker when you see that," he said. The fate of the offending word will be decided by the Aberdeen Parks Department. There is no word on when the decision will be made. What do you think?
