SEATTLE -- One person was shot in the hip in Seattle’s Central District, said Mark Jamieson of the Seattle Police Department.A 21-year-old man was hit in a drive by shooting in the parking lot of the King County Juvenile Detention Center at 1211 E. Alder St. at about 10:30 a.m. Friday.“I heard… like five shots. My wife jumped up and said those are gunshots. She got on the phone and reported it. I swear there were sirens coming within 15 seconds. They came from everywhere,” said Bud Derheim.Police said he was the only victim and taken to Harborview Medical Center. His injuries are non-life-threatening. “I know it was a drive by because after I heard all them shots, the guy took off in the car,” said Thomas McCray who lives across the street.Police are searching for the shooter who was last seen fleeing in a white sedan.Police haven't officially labeled this a gang shooting, but one obvious sign is the red bandana that witnesses saw thrown from the shooter's car.KIRO 7 reporter Essex Porter found friends of the victim outside Harborview Medical Center who refused to speak with reporters. Police said there was a brief scuffle inside the hospital when three of the victim’s friends chased someone who was apparently a rival gang member.A spokesman for the detention center said they don't know why the victim was there and that no one was released from the jail Friday morning. The center was on lockdown for about an hour after the shooting.Detectives from the gang unit and the homicide unit are investigating the shooting.
