A 29-year-old man was charged with second-degree murder Tuesday in the shooting death of his father, said prosecuting attorney for King County, Dan Satterberg.

According to charging documents, Tai Duc Thong called 911 at about 2:19 a.m. Sunday and told authorities he shot his 55-year-old father several times while high on drugs.

Thong spoke with 911 operators until police arrived and then he was advised to come out of the house with his hands up, documents stated.

Thong and his mother, a 55-year-old woman, came out of the southeast Seattle house and his father was found dead of multiple gunshots inside. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he soon died.

Thong’s mother said she and her husband were sleeping when their son ran into the room in a panic and told them to get up and get dressed because they were in danger, according to probable cause documents.

She said Thong told his father to open the safe and get his gun. While his father was trying to open the safe, Thong pushed him aside and opened it himself, documents stated. His mother said Thong then put the bullets in the gun.

All three of them went downstairs where Thong continued to act nervous and kept running his parents back and forth between the car and their home, continually telling them they were in danger, according to probable cause documents.

She said at one point Thong was holding two handguns when he shot his father three to four times. She did not know where the other handgun came from, documents said.

When questioned by police, Thong said when he escorted his parents to the front door he decided to confront his dad about his "second and secret family." According to documents, Thong said his dad "turned and reacted with his gun" so he shot him twice.

Seattle police said Thong said he thought he dad was going to shoot him, so he shot him first.

Thong told police he shot his father after smoking marijuana mixed with phencyclidine, a hallucinogenic drug known as PCP, angel dust, rocket fuel and other street names, police said.

Thong’s bail is set at $1 million. If convicted as charged, the sentence range is 15 to 23 years in prison
