Questionable Radiation Levels In Cell Phones

Monday, the Senate tackled an issue that could affect millions of Americans who use cell phones.

Experts testified about the dangers of cell phones. A recent report found that some phones emit more radiation than others, increasing the risk of cancer.

“When the cell phone sends the signal to the cell phone tower, that's when it sends radiation and it will send a similar amount of radiation to the tower and to my brain,” said Olga Nadienko with Environmental Working Group.

The report finds increased chances of tumors in the brain and salivary glands, especially in people who have used cell phones for 10 years or more.

Among those testifying, doctors who spoke about the risk to children.

“Children have a configuration of the skull that allows the penetration of radiation deeper,” said Dr. John Bucher of National Institutes of Health. He went onto say there is the potential for children to be at greater risk.

The Food and Drug Administration and American Cancer Society said that science doesn’t show a link between cell phone use and cancer.

Members of the cell phone industry said their products are safe, especially if we follow the instructions and hold the device at least one inch away from your body. Experts say: an ear piece could also help reduce any potential radiation exposure.
