Police Activity Locks Down Edmonds School Twice

EDMONDS, Wash. -- Hilltop Elementary in Lynnwood was locked down on two separate occasions Thursday for police activity in the area.The first lockdown at the school happened shortly after 9 a.m. as police searched for a man suspected of stealing a car.Trooper Keith Leary said the incident began when a man driving what was believed to be a stolen car, hit a DOT worker's truck in the southbound lanes of Interstate 405 just south of the Interstate 5 interchange sometime after 8 a.m.The man bailed out of the car and ran off into the woods near Hilltop Elementary.The lockdown ended at about 10:15 a.m.Police were unable to find the man.The school was locked down a second time for 30 to 45 minutes in the afternoon, again as a precaution, while police conducted a second search for the man after receiving a citizen’s tip.Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary said several citizens saw the suspect break the window of a truck and attempt to steal it. He also broke into another vehicle in the same area, Leary said.Police responded to the call and used a K-9 unit to track the suspect. The man attempted to hide by digging a shallow trench under a porch of a newly constructed home, but police were able to locate him.The suspect is a 41-year-old Snohomish man. He will be booked into the Snohomish County Jail on multiple charges including vehicle theft, possession of stolen property and vehicle prowling, Leary said.Troopers, Lynnwood police K-9, and the Snohomish County Sheriff's Department all aided in the man’s arrest.
